I was dumbfounded when I was asked to contribute -- to be perfectly honestly, I thought someone was playing a very unfunny prank on me -- to this book because I don't really think about myself that way.
And then as if they were trying to give me a heart attack, Martingale came back and asked me to contribute TWO quilts. What the what?!? I mean, seriously?? I didn't think they'd pick one, let alone two!
Don't let my face on there scare you. It scares me, but that's another story for another time.

I started really quilting (as opposed to when I learned how and then dropped it) a few summers ago when I had my first in many many years summer home off work and wanted a new challenge!
My mom is a quilter and I decided I wanted to quilt too when I was 15! :D
my sister has quilted for years and then my sweet hubby bought me a sewing machine they rest is history
so i started making quilts at the age of 70 thanks for the chance
I started quilting right after I got married as something to do with my sewing skills and free time since we didn't have any kids at the time ... wish I had some more of that time today. It's been a great release for me and wonderful way to express myself. Your quilts are absolutely wonderful.

I started quilting because of my sister in law. We went to knitting and stitching shows together, me for knitting, her for sewing. I found myself getting more and more drawn to the fabric stalls, and the next thing I knew, I was signing up for a quilting class!

I just decided one day that I wanted to learn how to sew, which quickly went to quilting! I taught myself and have been having a great time!
I started sewing when I was 8, mostly clothes as a 4H sewer. When I had my first baby in my 20′s, I made a couple quilts but then forgot about it again until about 5 years ago. A quilt store opened up in the small town I live in, and I started working there part time. Now I have an incredible stash, and I work on something for a little bit everyday!
I started quilting several years ago by joining a group in the neighborhood and have come to love it! I've picked up other hobbies in the last few years but put them aside in favor of making quilts. I love having something so beautiful to show for my work!
My grandmas both quilted, tho I never saw them do it. But, I grew up with quilts around and always loved them! The first quilt I bought fabric for was a HUGE Lone Star quilt, and by that I mean the diamonds were huge and there weren't many of them. I didn't (yet) understand about piecing and bias edges, had no idea how to put diamonds together, never even tried to piece the thing but had the cut out diamonds in my stash forever!

I've loved fabric since I was a little girl, watching my mother sew. I think I just wanted a great excuse to buy pretty fabrics and put them all together in one place and to make something for my loved ones.
I too love triangles. The lightning quilt? Cool. I've never been a fan of courthouse steps, but yours doesn't look like courthouse steps. I am intrigued!

i started quilting about 8 years ago or so because of a co-worker i got to know. i was a sewist, but hadn't done any quilting...i made clothes/skirts/medieval garb/curtain/home decor type stuff. she got me to join a little quilting group and we started making handbags and selling them together. we are no longer co-workers, but we still share inspiration with each other online and enable each other to spend way too much on fabric.

My grandmother gave her treadle sewing machine to me a few years ago, and my first project was a patchwork pillowcase. Once I discovered all the great blogs on modern quilting, I was hooked!
i made a blanket for my dog, and realised later it was a quilt!
After admiring others' quilty projects online, I decided to get off the sidelines and get in the game. I started off small - with a mug rug. And after a year of slowing trying new and bigger projects, I worked myself up to finishing my first quilt last year.

I wanted a new challenge and at a fabric fair myself and a friend bought a jelly roll each. she discovered she disliked finishing quilts off. i discovered i needed to make more (as well as completing hers!) It's been just over two years since I made my first,I make them for friends a gifts and for my daughter. I love choosing fabrics and making something happen-ty , jo x
Tried to do a small sampler and got so frustrated so I put it up. Then I saw some fabric I loved and decided to just do squares. I ended up with a huge quilt. :) Once I tackled that.... I was hooked and ready to try anything!

I started a log cabin cut from a tissue paper pattern in high school. the cutting alone totally turned me off to quilting! Then about 12 years ago my Mom showed me her rotary cutting tools and I was so excited... I took a beginning quilting class in 2002 and love it!

I've only been quilting for a year as a way to de-stress from grad school. It's amazing how much writing you can get done once you unlock the creativity channels. It's also amazing how much writing you can ignore when you're in the quilting-zone.
I made my very first quilt when my husband left me and my two boys to work in Melbourne for three months. In order to fill in the lonely nights, I self taught myself to make a quilt. Till to date, it's still a well loved quilt. It also reminds me of the survival and crazy time on my own with two very young boys.

5 years ago I was seduced by a free class offered by my local quilt shop. 9 months later I ordered my longarm and a week after setting it up I had a customer quilt on the frame. Haven't looked back...fell totally in love!!!

I made my first quilt back when I was just out of college, in 1983. Let me tell you, it was hideous. They quilting tools we take for granted now were not available. I made a few baby quilts, then basically stopped sewing when my boys were little... I started quilting again briefly in the 90's.. I made a few and then tired of it.... I've been sewing since I was quite young (maybe from the age of 6?), and I think quilting is a pretty natural progression when looking for something more challenging. I guess now I'm also at the age where many of my friends are having their first babies, and quilts are wonderful keepsakes to make for them that they won't grow out of too quickly!

Just over five years ago I asked for a sewing machine for Christmas - I was tired of paying $15 a pop to get my pants hemmed. Well, there it sat while I continued to use convenient double-sided tape. The next March I broke down and asked my grandmother to teach me how to hem. Baby steps she said. Learn to sew a straight line first she said. Here, sew these two squares of fabric together she said. A week later I had a full-sized 9-patch. I didn't learn to hem for another two years. I see you grandma...you evil genius!

I learned to quilt originally with my grandmother when I was 9 years old. She had started some quilts by piecing together crumbs of old clothing and textiles, and she let me use her sewing machine! She was so brave! My first quilt was 48 inches square and made with baby blue and chocolate brown polyester fabrics (ewe) and was turned and stuffed with goodness only knows what and tied with brown yarn. I have no idea whatever became of that quilt. It made me sweat while sitting under it. And not in a good way - how polyester makes you sweat but doesn't keep you warm! In later years I was taught and made my first quilt with...templates made from potato chip boxes. I still have those. WHY??? Today I am excited by the modern fabrics as well as the vintage and I strive to use a mixture of both in my quilts. Gives them life! I hope to win a copy of the book - how wonderful!

I signed up to take my first quilting class before I knew I was pregnant with our first child. I kept falling asleep during the evening class since I had been up since 5:15 for work. Years and 3 babies later, I finished that quilt. I love creating and feel like I can make something of beauty when I complete a quilt.

Started quilting to save my sanity after moving from CA to Chicago. Some friends recommended a beginning quilting class to get me out of the house when it snowed. That was more than 10 years ago and the rest is history!

We have a quilting group at work... I joined over 2 years ago having sewed my entire life but never having tried to quilt. The ladies in the group make quilts all year long and donate them to patience at City of Hope hospital.
I made my first quilt when I was in high school. It was a baby quilt for a Spanish teacher. My mothertaughtme to sew when I was fairly young. I made my first clothing for myself in 3rd grade.
I started quilting as sort of a homage to the women that came before me and out of a need to create and give something from the heart. I am a self-taught quilter and give most of my quilts to charity.

My mom taught me to sew when I was only about 8 years old and I've done a lot of sewing in the last 45 years, but she loved quilting best of all. Although I moved thousands of miles away, she would alway tell me of her quilts and show me pictures. Sadly when she passed away 5 years ago, she left many quilt tops and I took them over and took a class in quilting and have fallen in love with the whole process. I have all of mom's quilting tools and still have lots of her fabric stash and love every minute of it. Now, I introduced my grown daughter to quitling with a retreat last November and she too, loves the craft and has really taken off in the modern quilt direction. Double congrats for you - your quilts are awesome! When my kids were little and money was on the slim side, I began quilting throw quilts made from old denim jeans. Now it's called upcycling, but then it was called being frugal. They were just patchwork quilts, not really quilted but tied because they were so thick. They made perfect picnic blankets and everyone in my family has one!
I've been quilting for 28 or so years.I started when we used templates and scissors. My earliest quilts were tied and I still have a pieced sampler in my UFO pile that needs to have the hand quilting finished. I'm a machine quilter now(only for myself) and I would never get anything done without my trusty rotary cutter. I love all the modern fabrics used in traditional designs.
I started quilting when we bought a brass bed and didn't have enough $ left to purchase a quilt. I intended to make just one, but like some potato chips, one just isn't rnoug.
Those quilts are beautiful! I was cold one winter, and decided that I wanted a flannel quilt, and so I would make one. Took me 2 years to finish it, and ended with me climbing inside what was essentially a huge pillowcase in order to spread the batting (I had no idea what I was doing), but I finished it! I've come a long way since then, suffice to say :)
I'd been living in Thailand (my husband worked there) when my Mom died suddenly. My Dad asked me to stay with him for a couple of months after and I didn't have much to do. I ended up at a place called Piece Makers in Costa Mesa, CA one day and saw that they were having a class for beginner quilt making. So I took the class. It was for Log Cabins. That was in 1988 and I've been doing it ever since. My Mom was a crafty person too, so it seemed sort of fitting that I learn.
I started quilting in 1976 (likely, that's before you were born!) when I took a three-week quilting class in adult education. We learned how to hand piece and hand quilt. With avarice library research and reading (about quilting) on my part, by the end of three weeks, I knew more about quilting than the instructor!

OK, so many years ago I used to sit and embroider at lunch, and I was joined by a coworker who brought her piecing. Then a few more joined it with their knitting, etc. Anyway, I got interested in quilting from those stitching lunches. Then I started reading about quilting (how to, and the history of) and I got even more interested...

In college, my dorm's sleeping room was unheated. I was a sewer....how hard could it be to make a warm, patchwork quilt? I cut big squares it of pre-quilted red, blue and yellow calico (it was the 70's, ya know), stitched them together, put a blanket in the middle and a sheet on the back. jerilynn
Hello. I really enjoy reading your blog and I love the quilts you contributed to the book. I have loved fabric since I was a little kid in the 70s playing with my mom's calico prints. I learned to sew in 8th grade, but it wasn't until I was in my late 30s that I took a park district quilting class. I've been hooked ever since, and the blogging world really began fueling my creativity when I discovered all of its goodness about a year ago.

I started quilting as an undergrad in college- I wanted to play with colors, and I truly suck at painting/drawing. So I stumbled into fabric... and fell in love.
I had been sewing for years. After I had kids I wanted to make something for them that would last and be a sort of heirloom (my son still uses the quilt my grandma made for me when I was a kid). Needless to say, after my first quilt top, I was addicted. I love everything about it.
I always wanted a home made quilt but no one in my family was a quilter. So I made my first one with a friend's mom. It was a log cabin lap quilt all hand cut with sissors! After that I took a rotary cutting class and taught myself to quilt with more modern techniques form books and I've been quilting for 14 years now! I love it! (And I finally do have many home made quilts in my house.)

I got hooked when my husband's co-worker's wife decided to show some of other wives how to paper piece during a corporate retreat. It was so relaxing and it didn't stop there!

I started quilting while living overseas and the desire to create unique baby gifts. Where I was living at the time craft supplies were not always easy to findk but I could get items so sewing. This made quilting a convient hobby at the time. Twenty plus years later, it seems it stuck!

my Aunt started me quilting when I visited one summer in late middle school. I made a block into a pillow, came home and told my mom we had to do more! so i got my mom hooked.

At the risk of showing my age, I started quilting around 1980...there were no classes and the fabric back then quite frankly was UGLY! I quit quilting because of that until a few years ago when I saw all the gorgeous fabric there was. It's a much better world now :)
my grandmother quilted and I always loved what she created. So several years ago I just decided I wanted to quilt and I took a class...been hooked ever since

There are no quilters in my family. So when I discovered blogs, it sparked my interest in quilting. Now it is my favourite type of sewing.

I started quilting after I retired and moved to the beach! I thought what could be more relaxing than sitting at the sewing machine following in the path of my grandmother and aunt (well I do it at the machine while they did it by hand....). Truly I took a beginner class last Jan. and have been quilting ever since....9 quilts and many several table runners later I am thoroughly addicted!!!!
I got my start many many years ago with my mom using cardboard templates! Boy have we came a long way baby!
I started quilting two weeks ago when I woke up and realized that all I really wanted to do was sit at my sewing machine and make "blankies". If it wasn't for the blogging universe I would have had no idea where to start. Thanks for the chance to win this amazing book.

I had to move from the UK to Canada to start quilting. Never even knew what quilting was before I came here. Then it seemed like everyone here was an expert at some type of artsy-craft. My boyfriend bought me a Kenmore machine (which I still own, although now it's taken a back seat to my new Janome!) and I took some home-ec type basic quilting classes at the local high school and 20 years later, here I am with~ a whole whack of ufo's.

Growing up I watched my 85 years old grandma sew. Then one day needing to find a unique baby shower gift, I decided to attempt to make a baby quilt. Two weeks later, I gifted the not so bad looking quilt to my friend. Ever since then I have been addicted to making quilts although I still consider myself a beginner.

I stumbled upon it. I found myself with a large self-healing cutting mat and a Groupon coupon for online quilting classes. So, I said, "What the heck." That was a few months ago. I love it.
I wanted to quilt because my mother did. She learned in the 70s using the Georgia Bonesteel book and taking a class at the John C. Campbell Folk School.
I just had this urge to quilt...once I got the bug I never looked back!
A friend took me to her guild meeting when I was 19 as I had always sewn clothing. I loved it right away.

erm.. actually i haven't started but have been wanting to for the longest time ever.. i am so going to start very soon.. I finally took the plunge and bot some quilt supplies yesterday. First up will be a small one for my baby. So inspired by the many you made. Btw, I'm from Singapore, do you think quilts will be too warm for babies here? I've been pondering tt for the longest time and since i read that you were from Singapore, you may have some insight. Should I just make a sandwich of 3 cotton pieces so tt it will be lighter instead of the normal batting insert which are thick? Sorry this turned out into a question.. hehe. Reply when you can? I always loved quilts, but that radiation was not in my family. When I became a stay at home mom, and returned to the US, I started to teach myself. Love the changes over the years.

I started quilting 4 years ago when my daughter joined a quilting therapy group at Wellspring, a wonderful resource for cancer support. She visited the LQS that had kindly donated fabric and signed herself and my mother up for a pretty intense applique class. That quilt is full of memories.
She coerced me into joining them for a beginners class. So began many hours of fun and friendship. The kindness of quilters is really unparalleled. Quilting has been therapeutic for all of us and the excuse for many roadtrips which is how I met you at your fantastic LQS!
Oh ! Oh ! Oh! I love you two quilts! The balance you achieved with the polka dot triangles into zig zags is just exquisite! And the solids, plus the quilt in you lanterns is wonderful too. You make me want to try working with solids. I grew up in a potholder and baby quilt-making family, but I didn't start quilting myself, till I was pregnant. 14 years later I picked it up again, this time in earnest, and this time with fantastic fabrics and the whole wonderful blogging universe as teachers and co-conspirators.
(I'm sorry if this is posted twice. I'm not sure if it worked the first time.) I worked at a fabric store in high school. Although I didn't sew at all at the time (I just put the bolts away after they were cut), I fell in love with fabric and knew I wanted to make things out of it. I didn't have the guts to actually do it until a few years after high school, but I was totally hooked!
I used to sew a lot of my own clothes and I love all the different fabrics available today--I decided to try quilting and now I can't stop!
I started quilting in college - a twin quilt sewn, quilted and bound by hand. That may have been a mistake, but I still use it on my bed every night!
I think I wanted to connect to all those ladies who quilted to keep their families warm - I can't even imagine the hardship of that!
My quilting path starting a very long time ago with barbie bed quilts for the barbie townhouse! When I got married in the early nineties I started quilting like crazy! It is a passion that forever grows and transforms me.
I watched my grandma make quilts when I was a little girl and then when I got a sewing machine as a grad present I made my first one. It has since been lost in a fire but I remember it with love.

I started quilting about 4 years ago because I have always wanted to know how to quilt - and all I was ever taught was the 'tie quilt' kind. I wanted to delve into REAL quilting. I've been smitten ever since. :)
I'd wanted to quilt since I was little, thanks to Laura Ingalls Wilder, but it wasn't until my similarly obsessed sister just picked up and started doing it--successfully!--that I really understood I could do it too!
What a fun, book. I started quilting 30 years ago when I lived in Pennsylvania and that's what people do there, and actually in the winter there isn't much else to do....I migrated over to modern quilts and fabrics after a recent and lifechanging illness. I think I needed to jump start myself and my life. SO there you have it!!!
I started quilting trying to make a baby quilt for my first child. I still have it too and she is now 23.
Inspiring designs!
I was inspired to make quilts because of an old crazy quilt we had that my Grandma had made. It was on a bed in our basement and I loved all the mishmash of different fabrics and the crazy stitching. A wool blanket was the batting and it was a heavy old thing. My interest in quilts stemmed from it.
I started quilting on a bit of a whim a couple of years ago after stumbling across a few quilting blogs. Once I began I was immediately obsessed & haven't looked back. I'm self-taught but blogs have really given me the skills & confidence to keep going. I love both of your quilts, they're amazing. Congrats on being published!
