And We're Back!

The power came back on at 5:30 pm, and not a second too soon because my dear friends, I was about to lose the plot. Anyone who knows me knows that if I stop talking a mile a minute, it means I'm a sad little duckie. Or filled with rage. In this case, kind of a mix of both. The beeping started and then I heard the hum of the fridge... and I started whooping and crying tears of joy. Scared the living daylights out of the cats, but who cares! Electricity!!!

Although once I turned on the telly and put the news on, I felt like an utter piece of shit for being so distraught over being without power for 58 hours. People have lost their homes, their belongings and their lives. And what did I lose? The ability to turn on a light, flush the toilet and watch TV. Big friggin' whoop.

Anyway, I did take a few pictures while I was going around the house, prepping for the hurricane.

Did a load of laundry so we'd have clean clothes and underoos.

Filled a bunch of bottles with water.

Found a few more bottles and filled those with water. Also, filling the bathtub with water was insanely brilliant. My sincere thanks to Danielle for that wonderful suggestion.

Tied down the giant wooden table on our deck. Not sure that piece of string would've helped if we'd been in the eye of the hurricane though...

Dragged our deck chairs into the garage. Found a huge yellow jacket nest on the back of that one chair and sprayed the hell out of it with yellow jacket spray.

And the cats?

Couldn't have cared any less :)

I really hope everyone was as lucky as we were and didn't have damage to their property or person. I know not everyone has their power back so I truly hope they get it back soon. I really, really do.

We got more damage from the earthquake than Irene. Our stairs walked away from the wall on Tuesday, but we had no leaky basement, no shingles missing, no stranded in the middle of a swamp and no injuries/fatalities on our little homestead, and we were only without hardlined power for about a day.

(I will freely admit to all that when I fired up the generator on Sunday morning I plugged my electric kettle in before the refrigerator. )

Wow - you WERE prepared... I will use the hurricane/flood/earthquake/nuclear disaster scenario to quiet those who complain about the cold and snow around here this winter.

So glad you are safe and it all worked out. Remember the bathtub water-- it's never on the list of how to prepare for a hurricane, but it should be! Hugs!

Excuse me for asking but how come you couldn't flush the loo?

The water comes from the underground spring and requires a pump to pump water throughout the house and it runs on electricity!

also - dry shampoo, not on the emergency kit list, but should be!

We went without electric and usable water for weeks after a hurricane. Having the electric come back was like a luxury. The whole neighborhood was outside and applauding when the trucks showed up.

Glad things came together so well and I 'll try and remember that bathtub trick but we don't get any notice for earthquakes. [not that I'm complaining...we don't get many weather disasters in SoCal)

I'm sorry, but you got me laughing with that piece of string to secure the table! -Becky C.

I never lost power during the hurricane, and I'm thankful for that. I was able to stay in touch with my sister and brother and my sons, plus some coworkers who were also hunkered down waiting out the hurricane. The real problems started the next day when I had to go to work. A 20 minute drive turned into a 2-hour drive. We're so flooded out here in NJ.
