Sunsets And Rainbows

My sisters have left and the house is all quiet again. Just before they left, we got some terrible and incredibly sad news from home -- a beloved uncle of ours had died very unexpectedly. I'm still reeling from shock. It's one of those things that you see on the news, or it just happened to a friend of a friend's, but never to you. And now he's gone. This wonderful and kind man was ripped from our lives without warning. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me this was just an awful joke or a terrible dream.

He was the most careful man I'd ever met. In his words, in his actions, and with his health. So the fact that he was taken in his 60s is just unbelievable. But I know he wasn't afraid to go; his faith had always been strong, and I'm sure it helped him on his way.

I wept for him, for my dear aunt, my two cousins and their children who will grow up never knowing what a strong and great man their grandfather was.

Uncle Peter, I will miss you terribly. I hope you're resting in peace and watching over us.

That evening, we saw a rainbow. I rarely see rainbows around here and even rarer still that I'm able to photograph it. This was a lovely surprise, as if our uncle saying things will be just fine.

wow, audrie....

i got chills reading this... what sad news. i hope you and your cousins are able to articulate through stories what kind of man your uncle was. when i grieve for a relative, i find myself telling stories about them in the hope that their memory will continue to live on. what a gift that rainbow was...

I am keeping you and your family in my thoughts. It is always sad when someone unexpectedly passes. Keep warm memories in your heart and he will always be close.
I always say that people have not gone for ever; they have taken a vacation to a place we are not yet ready to visit. You will be together again one day.

Blessings on you. I lost my dad when he was 67 to an aneurism. Bummer. Thinking of you...
