Queen Patchwork Quilt

I was asked several months ago by a lady if I'd make her a queen-sized patchwork quilt. At the time, I was toying with the idea of not doing customs anymore. But I'm glad I said yes to this one, because even though it's a simple quilt, she and her family are seriously the sweetest people. I think that's one thing I'll miss about custom quilting... all the wonderful stories I hear from my customers.

They've been more than patient with me while I got some other projects done before I could start on their quilt, plus I fell ill twice while working on it. I believe it's her very first handmade quilt, and it's a birthday present from her husband. She cc'd me on an email to him to give him my email address because he wanted me to include a secret message on the backing. In her email, her excitement was utterly adorable :)

She also wanted me to free-motion quilt their names in the quilt. At first she said to put them in altogether and to leave space for another baby they hope to have in the future. I suggested we disperse the names randomly so it won't look added on when they add his / her name.

Eva, their daughter (unfortunately the thread + fabric + light = you can't see shit, but trust me it's there and muuuuch more visible in person)...

And last but not least, Jasmine.

I quilted it in a baby blue thread in straight-ish lines in the middle of every other square to give myself space to quilt the names in without crossing the straight lines. I have giant hand-writing so there's no way I was going to fit free-motion quilted names in small squares.

The backing is a beautiful 1930s wide back, and I just love it. Jasmine mentioned that she loved striped bindings, so I knew there was no other option :) I chose a light teal and white stripe because it looked 1930s-ish and went with the back and front nicely.

(Jasmine, if you're reading this, stop right here please! Your husband's message is right below this and I don't want to ruin the surprise!!!)

I printed this cute little poem from him on fabric. I don't know if it's written by him but it's fricking adorable. Around the quote, I did a bit of patchwork around it to make it a little prettier and a little less boring, then framed it in a baby blue solid.

It'll be on its way to Yorkshire, UK shortly and I hope it'll be loved for many, many years to come :)
