Power (And Sanity) Has Been Restored!!!

I have never been happier to turn my laptop on and update my blog. Ever. We lost power due to bloody Winter Storm Alfred on Saturday October 29... And finally got it back Saturday November 5. A total of 162 hours. One hundred and sixty-two hours. I had lost all sense of humour by the middle of the week, and by the end I was getting awfully stabby.

Evening of the storm. Cannot. See. The. ROAD.

Way in the back is the top of a tree that had fallen. We had no idea how massive the fallen branches were till the snow melted and wasn't weighing it all down.

Other side of the back deck.

Side of the house where three or four large tree limbs / branches fell. I was so afraid the entire tree would snap and land on the house.

Bushes all weighed down by the stupid snow.

They couldn't plow our street because there were so many fallen tree limbs laying everywhere.

On Tuesday these guys turned up with chainsaws and worked for a little over an hour. Didn't make a damn bit of difference whatsoever.

Came home from work today to find all the mess cleared up by the hubs and his dad, and he'd piled the wood between two trees in case we ever needed firewood hehe I doubt it, but it does look pretty all stacked like that :)

Last night I slept with only one layer of clothing and my toes weren't numb from the cold. This morning I woke up to the lovely scent of freshly brewed coffee. I've cleaned the house, washed the dishes, did the laundry and towels... tomorrow I can sew! :) And best of all, the cats aren't scurrying around, all freaked out.

I hope that everyone who's still waiting for their power to come back will get it very soon. It's a crappy situation especially with this cold weather, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I truly hope this never happens again. There should've been a better contingency plan in place. Yes, this was a storm that came way too early. Yes, no one expected this much devastation. But come on, I'm sure we can do better than this. And definitely without making excuses, making false promises or playing the blame game.

Wow, a whole week?! I'm really interested to know how you coped - what about cooking, your fridge, freezer etc? And did you sit around by candlelight?! Hope it doesn't happen again. Happy sewing!!

Good golly! I'm glad that your power and heat, etc, have all been restored. I'm shocked at how long that took! You'd think after the hurricane this summer and disasters happening all over the world that people would be more on the ball when it comes to snow.

Maybe I'm just used to it, being Canadian and all, but gah! If we ever had to go that long without power during winter up here, there would be firings left, right and centre, and possibly prosecution. We had an insane blizzard here in '07 that shut down the city for about a day and several people had to shelter in place (grocery stores, malls, offices) over night but as far as I know, the power stayed on. Couldn't see out the window and it took me 2 1/2 hours to drive 6 km home from work after they told me to leave but by noon the next day, everything was running smooth as silk.

Maybe invest in a generator. Or go all eco-crunchy and rig one up to the treadmill...

So glad you are OK. I don't normally comment, but want you to know that I read your blog first almost everyday. You are hilarious! and you make me laugh (sometimes out loud)!!! I live in LA in California and if it snowed like that I would roll up into a little ball and hibernate. Right now we are in the 60s/40s and I'm hating it... Glad you're back, take care of yourself, and enjoy your sew day!

Wow and I thought 40 hours without power sucked! By the last day of our power being out I was about to kill someone for food and start a fire in the middle of the living room for more light and heat! I can only imagine how you felt after that many days with no power. Glad to hear it's back, ENJOY IT!!!! Turn on every light and crank the heat up to 80!

As often as you lose power it might be time to invest in a Winn generator. Glad you're well, though!
