Was just about to write the same thing as Marci... It's a King Protea. They're one of my favourites.
i'm not sure but now i see from the other comments that what i was thinking was right. proteus are some of my faves - found a lot in south africa.

Yep - that's what it is...they grow here (in Hawaii) and they don't die, they just dry out, so you can keep them forever....Her's a link to tell you how to dry them:http://proteas.com/allaboutprotea.htm
It is a protea, and yeah, they do grow in Australia too. Aren't they lovely - sort of prickly and soft at the same time.
