Quilt Along: Part Two

So how's everyone doing on their blocks? Hate me yet? :)

In Part Two of the Quilt-Along, we're going to do the pinwheel star blocks. There's an alternative to how you can do this block, but I'm going to go through my method first. The instructions are very much the same as the first block's, but the fabric sets will change.

1. For each pinwheel star block, you'll need six 5.5" square pieces from three different fabrics.
Fabric A: 2 pieces
Fabric B: 2 pieces
Fabric C: 2 pieces

And from Fabric A, B or C, cut four 3.5" square pieces. Set these aside for the time being.

2. Take the six 5.5" squares and pin them right sides facing in this combination...
Fabric A + B (one set)
Fabric A + C (one set)
Fabric B + C (one set)

3. Sew around the four sides.

4. Take your rotary cutter and ruler, and cut diagonally both ways. Again, I recommend you move instead of shifting your squares.

5. Press the HSTs open (without moving your iron!) and trim the little corners. You'll end up with twelve 3.5" HSTs all up.

6. This block has a pinwheel in the centre, and I chose to place them like so. Take the four 3.5" squares you cut from Fabric A, B or C and place them in the four corners.

7. Sew them together, keeping track of each square.

And you should end up with a 12.5" pinwheel star block. You'll need to make six of these blocks for the quilt.

Alternatively, you could do the block using the traditional HST method, in which case you'd need twelve 3 7/8" squares and four 3.5" squares.
For the 3 7/8" squares you'll need to cut:
Fabric A: 4 pieces
Fabric B: 4 pieces
Fabric C: 4 pieces

And you'd pin them in the following combinations...
Fabric A + B (two sets)
Fabric B + C (two sets)
Fabric A + C (two sets)

If you're just joining in, you can find Part One of the Quilt-Along here.

If you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to answer them :)

I don't hate you, I hate my fabric right now. I have a bunch of stars, but I'm just now lovin them a whole lot. I may start over.

I just finished my Part One 5 blocks. Today I will start Part Two. It's fun and quite a challenge to match the fabrics. I'm enjoying it!
