Flying Geese Lap Quilt

I'm obviously obsessed with flying geese at the moment, so I decided to pull out a picture of a beautiful APC quilt that I found eons ago. I'd wanted to make a version of this quilt ever since I saw it but for some reason put it off. Then I thought of Juliana Horner's very first line of fabric called Rosette for the geese, and I found myself making many, many flying geese!

Very honestly, when I first saw the collection, I wasn't head over heels. I thought some of the prints were very lovely, but as a whole, it didn't do much for me. Still, I definitely wanted to play with them, and I'm glad I did because it's grown on me. Even though it's not totally up my alley, I think the prints play quite nicely together. Having the orange in there definitely helps! :) You KNOW I bought a lot of that bright orange print heehee!

Making flying geese is fun for me (I don't know why... I think I'm sick) and figuring out how many of which print to use and where to put them, even more fun! (Seriously, not kidding about being sick.) I used several light neutrals for the backgrounds -- I couldn't tell you what they were because I'm an idiot who never labels her solids -- and I think everything pulled together really nicely.

I stitched in the ditch with a cream Aurifil 50 wt so that the flying geese remained the focus of the quilt. For the backing, I used one of the large floral prints in green and aqua, and bound the quilt in solid Kona Mango.

It's currently for sale in the shop SOLD.

  6. The prints work so beautifully with the design. These look like pretty small geese! Are they two inches wide or so? I really love how section with the navy background pops--such a cool detail!

  9. Love the geese! The line is growing on me too. I've only bought a couple prints, but each time I go to Joanns I glance and another, and find myself beginning to really like another print. BTW did you use, AMH's no-waste flying geese tutorial? I haven't tried it yet, but its on my list

  13. I've been obsessing about this quilt ever since I first saw it (on IG I think). I think it's a perfect use of the Rosette line and really want to make one of my own. Would you be ok with a copycat version? I will of course give you credit for the original!!
