Was just about to write the same thing as Marci... It's a King Protea. They're one of my favourites.
i'm not sure but now i see from the other comments that what i was thinking was right. proteus are some of my faves - found a lot in south africa.

Yep - that's what it is...they grow here (in Hawaii) and they don't die, they just dry out, so you can keep them forever....Her's a link to tell you how to dry them:http://proteas.com/allaboutprotea.htm
It is a protea, and yeah, they do grow in Australia too. Aren't they lovely - sort of prickly and soft at the same time.

Can anyone tell me what this flower's called? We used it on the shoot and no one can tell what it's called! 
It's gorgeous and reminds me of wildflowers in Australia.
