Surprise HST Quilt

A very good friend of mine is expecting her second baby very soon (four weeks!!!) and I wanted to make her a quilt to commemorate this awesomeness. Especially because she's slightly apprehensive about having a second child they didn't plan for. I totally understand the apprehension, but a new little baby is coming! I hope that all melts away once she lays eyes on her little man :)

As you might've guessed, these aren't my typical colours hehe I was pulling fabric at work and had to warn my colleagues that it was for a friend and I wasn't having a stroke lol :) But remember a while back when I pulled this stack and made this wallhanging? Same friend! Haha! I figured I'd use the fabric I had leftover and just add to it since they were her colours and style.

I'd taught her to sew and quilt, so she ended up making her baby a quilt. Totally stealing my thunder there... Just sayin'. But I thought a lap quilt would be awesome... they could all use it! Thunder stolen back! Hah! (I'm really a good friend, I promise hehe)

I got asked a few times if I had trouble working on a quilt that's totally not my colours, and the answer is no. It was easy, because I knew she'd love it. Plus I think the prints and colours are kind of interesting. It is absolutely possible to like something without wanting it for yourself.

I gifted it to her this past weekend and she was so surprised and thrilled! I hope the whole family spend a lot of time under it being cosy and making memories for years to come :)

Here's the hubs being my quilt holder upper... See his little green pom pom peeking out on top? LOL!

  1. It's very pretty and thoughtful. Last year I helped my modern guild mates make a Vintage Quilt Revival sampler in civil war fabrics for one of our members. They can grow on you and by the end I decided that I was going to make myself one. The feeling passed but I'm so glad we did it bc she really loved it (I think), and who wouldn't enjoy that??

  5. Isn't that what a quilt is about? Giving one they love, whether you do or not? (I've done a few of those myself)

  6. I love those fabrics. Now, that is. I used to call them "old lady fabrics" since that is what they remind me of.
