Blogger's Quilt Festival - Dr Seuss Quilt

Amy's Creative Side - Blogger's Quilt Festival
Amy of Amy's Creative Side is hosting the fourth Blogger's Quilt Festival, and of course I had to join in!

My entry this time is the Dr Seuss-inspired quilt I made for my husband's cousin Megan who was expecting a baby. (She's since had the baby, and it's a little boy named Eli Christopher!)

Megan had chosen to decorate Eli's nursery in all things Dr Seuss, so I used all the colours and prints that struck me as Seuss-ish. The pattern I used is based on Denyse Schmidt's Hop, Skip and a Jump, just much less wonky.

I had grave doubts about this quilt initially, probably because I was so annoyed that the Kaufman line of Seuss fabrics hadn't been released yet. And by the time I was finished, this turned out to be one of my favourite quilts I'd ever made :)

I quilted it in a wonky grid pattern with white and blue threads, and it really lent itself to the Seuss vibe so well.

For the backing I used a black and white gingham, which I absolutely fell in love with because it was super soft and cosy after washing.

The binding came very easily after I found this tiny red and white stripe. It made perfect sense against the black and white gingham :) The cuteness level is just unbearable!

When I presented this quilt to the mother-to-be, she was completely thrilled with it and told me she couldn't wait to snuggle under it with Eli. The weather's cooled so I hope they've been spending their days under it, getting to know one another :)

Make sure you have a peek at all the other quilts in the festival!

  1. Love, love the colours in this quilt. I love gingham on the back of quilts. I have used black gingham too. It makes a wonderful contrast to the front.

  3. It completely has the Dr. Seuss vibe. I think I like it better that it ISN'T made with the actual Dr. Seuss fabric. Super cute!

  5. I agree - it's very Dr. Seuss without being TOO Dr. Seuss. If that makes sense. Love it, and love what you did with the backing and binding.

  7. I love it! Like Felicity said, its very Dr Suess without being too Dr Suess. I mean, what if in 3 years she decides to redecorate in a whole nother theme, chances are this quilt will still be in perfect harmony with it!

  8. Brilliant! Those colors are definitely Seuss-ish! The gingham is great as is the quilting! I think this is even better than Seuss because a 19 year old would still love this!
